Transfer crucibles are refractory-lined vessels used to transport molten aluminium. The refractory lining material depends upon the application. Desired characteristics include resistance to erosion and thermal shock, minimal heat loss of the metal being transferred, ability to reline liners, reduced maintenance time and increased safety.

Ladles are used in the aluminium and foundry industries to transfer molten metal from one location to another, generally from a melting furnace to a holding furnace. They are often used to hold metal while it is treated by degassing and/or fluxing. They are filled by tapping out a furnace or utilizing a metal transfer pump. Most transfer ladles require supporting steel shells and are lined with refractory, which can be a precast shape or cast in place. Due to extreme conditions in which the refractory is subjected, it must be resistant to thermal shock, cracks and erosion.

Pyrotek has supplied hundreds of crucibles and ladles to the aluminium industry and helps producers and die casters improve metal transfer efficiency by offering a variety of refractory designs and materials, including Pyrotek's proprietary reinforced fibreglass material (RFM®). Fully engineered solutions allow for easy replacement of drop-in liners and quick maintenance. Backup insulation, steel shells and lids also are available.

Benefits include:

  • Increased metal quality
  • Lower energy costs
  • Improved process efficiency
  • Reduced downtime and replacement costs
  • Customized designs
  • Turnkey solutions
